Those were the words that opened my interview on America Tonight with Kate Delaney — and they captured my reaction perfectly. I was as surprised as anyone to receive an invitation to appear on the show. According to the email, an Australian media company had passed on my details, and shortly afterward I was contacted directly by Kate Delaney’s team. My first instinct was scepticism. At the time, I believed it to be the stronger work — more polished, with deeper character development. I’ve since learned that readers often see value in both for different reasons. Kate’s assistant, William, followed up the next day to organise a Zoom interview. I’ll admit, interviews are not something I naturally enjoy. I have a stutter — something I’ve lived with most of my life — and while it’s never stopped me from writing, it has made live conversation feel more exposed. Still, we went ahead.
