America Tonight with Kate Delaney — An Unexpected Invitation

It’s fate that we are speaking to our next guest… America Tonight with Kate Delaney , a nationally syndicated U.S. radio programme. Those were the words that opened my interview on America Tonight with Kate Delaney — and they captured my reaction perfectly. I was as surprised as anyone to receive an invitation to appear on the show. According to the email, an Australian media company had passed on my details, and shortly afterward I was contacted directly by Kate Delaney’s team. My first instinct was scepticism. Opportunities like this don’t usually come my way, and I wondered what the catch might be. Recording a remote interview for America Tonight with Kate Delaney . There wasn’t one. The initial conversation was about my first novel, Skullduggery , but I suggested we instead focus on my second book, Winter of Red . At the time, I believed it to be the stronger work — more polished, with deeper character development. I’ve since learned that readers often see value in both for different reasons. Kate’s assistant, William, followed up the next day to organise a Zoom interview. I’ll admit, interviews are not something I naturally enjoy. I have a stutter — something I’ve lived with most of my life — and while it’s never stopped me from writing, it has made live conversation feel more exposed. Still, we went ahead. Kate Delaney during a live studio broadcast of America Tonight . Kate and I spoke about the novel, my interest in history, and my favourite character. Then, without much ceremony, we were live. Only afterward did it fully register that the interview was being broadcast across the United States and syndicated through multiple radio networks. What stood out most was how enjoyable the experience was. The interview was professional, relaxed, and genuinely engaging. Kate has a rare ability to make conversation feel natural while still drawing out the heart of a story. William, in particular, deserves credit for his patience and good humour throughout the process. I listened to the broadcast live on 1030 The Voice, and the following day I sent a short note of thanks. “ Very professional — and most importantly, fun.” For a complete listen to the interview, you can access it here:🔗 https://soundcloud.com/kated-294710598/071420paulrushworthbrownwithbumpers/s-SltBmZ3u3GP
